Tanzania and Zanzibar Honeymoon
A Winning Combination
What makes Tanzania such a perfect honeymoon destination is the combination of safari and beach. One of our favourite routes is the northern circuit combining Arusha, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, and Zanzibar.
The driving routes and internal flight connections mean you can explore multiple regions without spending too much time looking at the country through a plane or car window. If you want a safari and beach honeymoon, it doesn't get much better than Tanzania.
On the safari side, there are no shortage of luxury tented camps and lodges to look after you out in the bush, and Zanzibar has a amazing selection of 5* hotels, resorts, and villas.

5 Questions to Ask Yourself
- What level of luxury am I looking for? Am I happy with a luxury tented camp or a mobile migration camp, or do I want a luxury lodge?
- How much am I willing to spend? As a good rule of thumb, you should expect to pay around $800/person/day out on safari, and $500/person/day in Zanzibar.
- How long do I want to travel for? We generally recommend 10-12 days as the optimal time for a safari and beach honeymoon. This allows you to visit multiple safari destinations, have a good amount of time on the beach, and stay in beautiful luxury accommodation to maximise the experience.
- Do I want to see the migration? If you want to see the migration - in particular a river crossing - then you'll want to travel in August and be in the north of the Serengeti. The camps and lodges here are generally more expensive, so if the migration isn't a priority for you there is exceptional safari in Central Serengeti.
- Where do I want to be in Zanzibar? If you value privacy and exclusivity, we recommend staying on the eastern coastline where there are a number of stunning private villas and lodges (but the beaches are tidal). If tideless beaches are important to you, we recommend the northern tip of Zanzibar where there are some fantastic 5* beachfront hotels.
Where to stay in the Serengeti?
The Serengeti is a vast ecosystem and there is exceptional safari in the south, central, and north of the park. Where you stay depends on the time of year you are visiting, the style of accommodation you are looking for, and your budget.
- If you are travelling between June to October, you'll want to be in either Central or Northern Serengeti to coincide with the movements of the Great Migration. If you are travelling in July and August (and sometimes early September), you have a good chance of witnessing a river crossing in the north.
- If you are travelling between November and March, Central or Southern Serengeti is a great choice. It's calving season in February, so if you're travelling at this time we recommend staying in the Ndutu region of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (bordering the Serengeti), as the calving season attracts lots of big cats and makes for some incredible safari sightings.
- April to May is the long rainy season in Tanzania, so we recommend avoiding travelling at this time.
Our favourite honeymoon lodges in the Serengeti
Premium honeymoon lodges in the Serengeti
If you're looking for an ultimate luxury experience, some of our favourites include: Lemala Nanyukie, Singita Sabora Tented Lodge, Sinigta Sasakwa, Four Seasons Safari Lodge, and Klein's Camp.
Luxury Honeymoon lodges in the Serengeti
Tanzania has an excellent selection of luxury tented camps, a step up from glamping that still keep a lid on costs compared to the luxury lodges. Some of our favourites in this category include: Kaskaz Mara Camp, Siringit Migration Camp, Serengeti Under Canvas, Nimali Mara, Lemala Mara and Lemala Ndutu.
Migration Camps in the Serengeti
Part of what makes safari in Tanzania so special is the Great Migration. One of the greatest wildlife shows on earth, it's an extraordinary event that takes place every year. There are a number of camps that move throughout the season to follow the herds of the migration, putting you in prime position to witness the massive herds as they make their journey northwards. Being mobile migration camps, they don't have all the same bells and whistles as the permanent camps or lodges, but certainly do more than enough to keep you comfortable out in the bush, and work out much cheaper.
Some of our favourites here are: Nasikia Mobile Migration Camp, Siringit Migration Camp, Serengeti Under Canvas, and Ubuntu Migration Camp.
Where to stay in Zanzibar?
The northern tip of Zanzibar is one of the more popular regions due to its tideless beaches. There is a good selection of 5* beachfront hotels here, some of our favourites being Gold Zanzibar Beach House & Spa, Zuri Zanzibar, Essque Zalu. If you stay on the eastern coastline, you'll have more privacy and exclusivity, but the beaches are tidal. There are some stunning properties here, with some of our favourites being Tulia Zanzibar, Melia Zanzibar, White Sands, Matemwe Lodge, and Amani Boutique Hotel.
If you're looking for the ultimate barefoot luxury experience, it doesn't get much better than Mnemba Island.
